Race and ethnicity

Race and racism

The Equality Act 2010 covers race discrimination in employment and training; education; housing; the provision of goods, facilities and services.

There are specific duties which mean that staff of public bodies should have the skills and knowledge to help to eliminate unlawful racial discrimination and promote equal opportunities and good race relations.

The Equality Act defines ‘racial grounds’ as being on the grounds of colour, race, nationality or ethnic or national origins. That means that discrimination on the grounds of nationality, ethnic or national origins is equally unlawful as treating someone less favourably because of their colour or race.

Race remains a major issue for British society, whether that is in the workplace or in the way that businesses respond to the needs of an increasingly ethnically diverse society. It makes business sense to make sure staff are supported to act in a way that is as inclusive as possible and that meets the needs of individuals.

Equal and Diverse offers a range of bespoke training opportunities for the private and public sector. These courses, which may lasta few hours , half or a full day cover a range of topics. For general training this might include:

• Understanding what the Single Equality Duty means for race and nationality

• The nature of race discrimination – its history and impact.

• Institutional race discrimination.

• Understanding how good race awareness improves business and customer relations.

• Cross cultural communication.

We also offer a range of specialist training in the area of race and cultural competence, which would include sessions on:

• Understanding how to review functions and policies in light of the general and specific duties

• Carrying out equality impact assessments

• Carrying out consultations, in particular consulting with minority ethnic groups and individuals
