Bereavement and loss

Good Grief

This is an in depth training programme which is offered to organisations involved in the support of individuals with a learning disability.

One of the major insights from recent research is the realisation that many adults with learning disabilities whose behaviour has become challenging have an unresolved bereavement in their recent experience.

This two day programme provides an experiential opportunity for those who support others, to reflect upon and consider their own understanding of and approach to issues of death and bereavement.

By the end of the course participants will have:

• Explored the nature of death and bereavement within contemporary society, and in particular in the experience of people with a learning disability.

• Examined the nature of multiple loss syndrome and compounded losses, and their impact on the lives of people with a learning disability.

• Explored contemporary approaches to the psychology of death, especially the grief process and bereavement models, including the palliative dimension.

• Considered the nature of blocked and complex grieving and barriers to healthy bereavement.

• Considered the role of the support worker in assisting healthy grieving.

• Reflected on the influence of religious and faith practice upon bereavement.

• Developed an awareness of existing resources to support work with people with a learning disability around death and bereavement.

• Utilised some resources and reflected on their use in practice.

• Considered the role of bereavement policies within their organisation.

The workshop will be supported by a handbook which will be given to all participants.
