Racism and football.

On Saturday the football press will take an extra interest in the Manchester United Liverpool game. Always a local grudge match it has a special tension this week as it is the first time that Liverpool’s Luis Suarez is set to go head-to-head with Patrice Evra since the Liverpool striker was banned for eight games for racially abusing the United defender.

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News , Ferguson said he is shocked by the re-emergence of racism and insists a tough line is needed.

“I don’t understand at all where it’s coming from,” said Ferguson. “This is a moment where we have to take stock and we should do something about it if it’s surfacing again, and be really hard and firm on any form or shape of racism.

“There have been a couple of examples recently which is not good. In 2012, you can’t believe it. It was obvious maybe 20 years ago and the improvements have been for everyone to see.

“I have had some fantastic black players and with every one of them I have enjoyed my working relationship with them.”

Chelsea defender John Terry has been stripped of the England captaincy as he is to stand trial in July after being charged with racially abusing QPR’s Anton Ferdinand, brother of United’s Rio Ferdinand. It is a charge Terry denies.

And there have been a number of incidents of fans being arrested after allegations of racist abuse towards players in recent weeks.
